Our History
In the summer of 1966, Sheboygan Human Rights Association, Inc., applied for and was awarded a grant for Project Head Start from the Office of Economic Opportunity as an eight-week summer program. This summer program structure remained until 1969.
In 1969, the program expanded to a school year program and currently operates under this structure for Head Start. Early Head Start’s program year is a full-year program. Over the years Sheboygan County Head Start has continued to expand; starting with just classrooms in Sheboygan to now offering services countywide. The program has also continued to expand the number of children and families served; starting as a small summer school classroom to now serving 172 Head Start children and 12 Early Head Start families. As funding opportunities become available Sheboygan County, Head Start seek opportunities to continue to meet the needs of our local community.
Head Start is the nation’s premier provider of early childhood developmental and educational services improving the lives of many low income children and their families. Sheboygan County Head Start is proud of the fact that it has been providing comprehensive services to those in need since 1966.
